Pt. 44 - The Nephilim

Written by

Serpent Head CrushedThis post will focus on the origin and history of the Nephilim in order to demonstrate the strategy that Satan likely used in his attempt to gain dominion over the world. God gave this dominion to mankind, but as we have wandered from Him, it has defaulted more and more to Satan. And as we continue to rebel against God, we will eventually reach a point where Satan will be given full reign over the earth, just as he has always desired. Although this reign will not end well for him or his seed, he is nevertheless proud enough to believe that he can defeat the prophecies of God and gain his victory.

So what would Satan need to do in order to gain this full dominion? Well, he would have to completely break God’s chain of prophecy by eliminating the beneficiary of God promises. After all, if the seed or offspring of “the woman” (Gen 3:15) no longer existed on the earth, then there would be no reason for Jesus to return to save her, and no seed remaining to crush his head. The world would therefore remain in Satan’s hands as the “god of this age” (2Co 4:4), and he and his offspring would reign unfettered over the earth.

But God warned the ‘shining one’ long ago that his days would be numbered, which is why Satan will step up his battle plans very shortly. Way back in the days of the Garden of Eden, he was told that the offspring of the “woman” would crush his head;

So the LORD God said to the serpent, 'Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” (Genesis 3:14-15)

DNA HelixFrom that moment on, Satan has been intent on crushing the woman’s head before she does the same to him. This is why his first plan of attack in the days before the flood was to intermingle angelic DNA with human DNA, thereby corrupting the seed of the woman. God created all life in earth according to their kind, but by intermingling an angelic kind with human kind, the resulting hybrid would no longer be the seed of the woman. Instead, this powerful offspring became the seed of Satan, being neither fully angel nor fully human.

As this hybrid DNA spread through the human population, mankind was in danger of being bred out of existence. But in addition to that, the Bible tells us that these hybrids were inherently evil, and so the earth became full of chaos, leading the remaining remnant of mankind to call out to God for justice and to avenge their blood.

The Work of Chaos

In order to demonstrate the role of these hybrids in this chaotic pre-flood world, we can simply review the word ‘Nephilim’ to see if the original Hebrew language reveals any additional meaning. And it does. In today’s Hebrew language, the word Nephilim would be spelled the following way, reading from right to left;

Nephilim-Modern

Let’s now examine what this word would look like in the paleo-Hebrew pictographs, also reading from right to left;

Nephilim-Paleo

Reading from right to left, these letters depict a seed, a mouth, a yoke, an arm, and waves of water. And the associated meanings for these ‘letters’ would be the following;

SEED:  Continue, Heir, Son
MOUTH:  Blow, Scatter, Edge
YOKE:  Teach, Yoke, To, Bind
ARM:  Work, Throw, Worship
WAVES:  Chaos, Mighty, Blood

When we consider the context of this word, given the actions of the Nephilim while on earth, it would seem that the interpretation is fairly clear;

“The heir is scattered and taught the work of chaos”

The Bible seems to confirm this interpretation, since it describes how man became increasingly evil once the Nephilim were born in the days before the flood. The work of chaos is actually a completely appropriate way to describe what was happening in those days, as the peaceful ways of God were exchanged for the chaotic ways of rebellion. And the book of Enoch expands on Genesis by describing how mankind was scattered once the Nephilim turned against mankind and began to devour them, as we’ll explain in a few moments.

Giant FootprintWhile the word ‘Nephilim’ is interpreted a bit differently by different scholars, these differing interpretations share common roots. It is often pointed out that the word nephal means ’fallen’, and so the plural term Nephilim likewise would mean ’fallen ones’. However, the term nephil can mean ’tall’ or ‘giant’, so Nephilim can also be interpreted as ‘giants’. And whether it was the Septuagint or Josephus or the early church, the commonly accepted interpretation of the word Nephilim was indeed ‘giants’. And the fossil record has certainly confirmed the presence of giants in the ancient world, so there is no reason to dismiss this interpretation.

Genesis 6 and Enoch

The early church was keenly aware of the reality of the giants because their generation was far less removed from those historic days. And in fact, the remnants of the post-flood Nephilim were still on earth in their day, as attested by a number of historical records. They also had the book of Enoch to consult, which provided a detailed history on these giants. In fact, Jesus and the disciples were so well acquainted with Enoch that over 100 passages in the New Testament alone appear to have their origins from that book. And of course we know that Jude quoted Enoch’s writings directly, even calling Enoch a prophet;

“Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men: “See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones to judge everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of all the ungodly acts they have done in the ungodly way, and of all the harsh words ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” (Jude 1:14-15)

Enoch - Dead Sea ScrollsFrom these facts alone we can see that Enoch was considered an authoritative book by the disciples and the early church. But there is more. This book was held in such high esteem by the Essenes that more copies of the book of Enoch were found in the caves of Qumran than any other text. So with that in mind, let’s continue to examine what Enoch has to say about these giants called the Nephilim, and let’s also see how these passages are connected to Genesis chapter 6.

“The Angels, The Sons of Heaven”

“And it came to pass when the children of men had multiplied that in those days were born to them beautiful and fair daughters. And the angels, the sons of heaven, saw and lusted after them, and said to one another: ‘Come, let us choose us wives from among the children of men and have children with them’.”  (Enoch 6:1-2)

So far, we can see how this passage from Enoch relates directly to Genesis 6, because it sounds virtually the same;

“When men began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose.” (Genesis 6:1-2)

Bene haElohimSo we can see how these accounts are perfectly parallel in context. But it leaves us to wonder WHY the angels wished to have children. Was it pure lust that was in their hearts, or did they have an ulterior motive for altering the gene pool of mankind?

Scholars disagree about the motive behind this event, but the full counsel of scripture appears to provide a motive. But more on that in a moment. For now let’s stick with the book of Enoch, where we find the ’Watcher’ angel Semjaza organizing a rebellion against God, along with 200 of his fellow angels;

"And Semjaza, who was their leader, said to them: ‘I fear you will not agree to do this deed, and I alone shall have to pay the penalty of this great sin.’……..Then they all swore together and bound themselves by mutual curses. And they were in all two hundred who descended in the days of Jared in the summit of Mount Hermon." (Enoch 6:3-6)

It’s interesting that this verse in Enoch state that the Watcher angels came down to the earth during “the days of Jared”, because in Hebrew the name Jared indeed means “shall come down.” That’s hardly coincidental, since each of the ante-deluvian patriarchs had names that described a prophetic or significant truth of their day.

In fact, as we continue through their lineage, we discover that the 9th in line from Adam was Lamech, whose name means “despairing.” This reflects the condition of man on the pre-flood earth as the Nephilim continued to interbreed with them, causing the earth to turn increasingly evil in the process. As the remnant of man-kind came increasingly under assault by their Nephilim relatives, their previously peaceful existence was replaced with despair.

As an aside, it's also interesting that Enoch describes how these Watcher angels descended to the summit of Mount Hermon, which will become quite significant in a future post. However, if you want to see where this is going, simply refer to the ‘Azazel’ post in the ‘Current Events’ section of this website. For now, let’s continue on with Enoch’s explanation.

“Tall As The Cedars”

"And all of them together went and took wives for themselves, each choosing one for himself, and they began to go in to them and to defile themselves with sex with them………and the women became pregnant, and they bare large giants, who’s height was three thousand ells.” (Enoch 7:1-3)

Nephilim HeightsChapter 7 of Enoch continues to fill in some blanks regarding the pre-flood world, describing the giants that came from this union between angels and women. And while nobody knows precisely what an “ell” is today, hence what “three thousands ells” is equal to in height, historical records indicate that these giants were up to 36 feet tall. So it’s easy to see how they became the “men of renown” according to Genesis;

“The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.” (Genesis 6:4)

Obviously, a 36 foot tall man seems unimaginable to us in our day, and even the mention of this notion would tend to draw ridicule from all sides. But before we throw this idea on the ash-heap of possibility, consider what God had to say about the Amorites from the land of Canaan, who were descendants of the Nephilim, and whose height He compared to cedar trees;

“I destroyed the Amorite before them, though he was tall as the cedars and strong as the oaks. I destroyed his fruit above and his roots below.” (Amos 2:9)

Although many will tend to view this passage as merely a divine poetry of some sort, I chose to consider it’s message on equally literal terms. God was comparing their height to literal cedar trees, just as he compared the tail of the dinosaur Behemoth to a cedar tree (Job 40:17). The great height of the Amorites was incredibly renown in those days, as was the great height of all of the Nephilim descendants. The fact that they were indeed giants was even confirmed by the twelve spies of Israel during the Exodus;

“We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”  (Nu 13:33)

NephilimIf all of this is beyond belief for the reader, I would encourage you to read Stephen Quayle’s book ‘Genesis 6 Giants’, which is the best accumulation of historical accounts pertaining to giants that I’ve seen to date. You may be shocked to find just how many historical references there are, from Asia to Europe, and all the way to the Americas. You may also be surprised to learn just how long their DNA lingered on this earth, since many of these historical documents describe giants on the earth all the way up through medieval times, and even occasionally up to the present day. In North America alone, the Native American 'legends' regarding giant men are numerous, and many giant skeletons have been found that would support those accounts.

“Men Could No Longer Sustain Them”

Given the incredible size of these hybrid men, we can imagine how difficult it would have been to provide for them. These were the “men of renown” (Gen 6:4) of the ancient world, which means they were the kings and queens that ruled the earth. In other words, mankind served them, and did their bidding……or else. And as these giants increased in numbers and grew in size, their daily nutritional requirements began to outstrip what mankind could produce for them. And once that happened, Enoch describes a hideous turn of events;

Giant Fossilized“The giants consumed all the work and toil of men. And when men could no longer sustain them, the giants turned against them and devoured mankind. And they began to sin against birds, and beasts, and reptiles, and fish, and to devour one another‘s flesh, and drank the blood. Then the earth laid accusation against the lawless ones.” (Enoch 7:4-6)

If there was ever a valid reason given for the complete destruction of the earth, this would be it. The Nephilim were so wicked that they began to literally devour man and devour each other, resorting to cannibalism as a means of sustaining themselves. And as their hybrid DNA became more and more dominant on the earth, Satan was close to achieving his goal of replacing the seed of the 'woman' with his own chaotic seed, the Nephilim. In essence, mankind was being bred out of existence.

PanBut the evil of the Nephilim didn’t stop there, since they also began to “sin” against the animals as well. While this precise sin is not clearly defined in the Bible, there is another book in existence that does. The book of Jasher, referred as a reliable historical source in two different places in the Old Testament, confirms that these fallen angels also crossed the DNA of divergent animal species in order to provoke God. These hybrid hijinks may explain the numerous myths about human/animal chimeras, such as the half-human and half-goat ‘Pan’, who had his own Temple grounds at the base of Mount Hermon.

Presuming this is true, one can imagine the anger that God felt as He watched this rebellion taking place with His creation. He had commanded that each was to increase in number according to it’s own kind, but the angels and the Nephilim were cross-breeding themselves not only with humans, but also with the animals, essentially creating new kinds that did not resemble anything that God intended. Jasher states that this was done to provoke the Lord, and so it did, leading to the great flood of Noah’s day.

The Great Flood

“The LORD saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.  The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain.  So the LORD said, “I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth - men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air - for I am grieved that I have made them.” (Genesis 6:5-7)

Great FloodIf you’ve ever wondered what is was that could have provoked God to destroy His creation, you can stop wondering.  The fallen angels had so corrupted the DNA of mankind that there was little 'seed of the woman' remaining. The seed of the earth was becoming that of Satan’s Nephilim, and his plan to usurp the dominion of the earth had almost been realized. After all, if there was no seed of the woman left on earth, then her seed would no longer be around to crush his head, and God’s chain of prophecy would be broken.

From this vantage point, we can see that God’s destruction of the earth was a blessing to mankind, because God saved us from perishing forever. God preserved this remnant seed by saving only Noah and his family, because Noah was pure in his generation. The word for 'pure' is the Hebrew word tamiym, which means a pureness that is without physical blemish. In other words, it was not that Noah was merely a righteous man, but more importantly, God preserved him and his wife because they had no Nephilim blood in them. In turn then, the plan was that Noah’s family would repopulate the earth with purely human DNA, which would ensure the survival of the seed of the woman, through whom prophecy would be revealed. There was only one problem…

“And Also Afterwards”

Even though Noah and his family were still genetically pure, the question is whether or not his son's wives could say the same. Given the rampant spread of Nephilim DNA throughout the world, the possibility of even a slightly tainted blood line was very high. If any of Noah’s sons married women that had this genetic marker in them, then some of their resulting offspring would also become Nephilim. And sure enough, Genesis 6 suggests that at least some Nephilim DNA made it through the great flood and into the new world;

“The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.” (Genesis 6:4)

When we look at the Table of Nations, we can surmise that Ham’s wife may have had this DNA, because it is through Ham’s line that the first post-flood ‘gibborim’ were produced, which included Nimrod.

NEXT TIME:

In the next post we’ll discuss the post-flood giants that included Nimrod, and examine how they affected the world that we know today.

James,

Amos 2:9 indeed provides a comparison for size and strength. So I'm confused as to what you disagree with.

I disagree with this (Amos 2:9) it's my opinion this is a example in comparison using trees as a guide of reference for size and strength.

Mike,

I have a quite lengthy article* about the grammar behind Nephlim. Am I allowed to post here? If not, not hard feelings at all.

*=A summary I made from a book that's partly about Nephlim.

Glad you enjoyed it. I've got alot of new material to post, but have had so little time lately to do it. Hopefully I can get things a bit more 'current' in the weeks ahead.

Love your site. Tim Martin shared with me part 44 Nephillim. Loved that article. once you realize the significance of the fallen watchers, your eyes begin to see what God said certain things and did certain things. Helps explain a lot of mysteries really. Thaks for this article.
