Pt. 22 - 7 Festivals, 7 Millennia

In the preceding seven posts we examined each of the seven churches separately and saw how they represented a particular phase in church history in the last two millennia, with one millennia yet to come. These phases included the following blocks of time;

EPHESUS  “The Laboring Church”  (30-100 A.D.)
The early church labored intensely to bring the Gospel to a pagan world

SMYRNA  “The Persecuted Church”  (100- 314 A.D.)
The early church was severely persecuted by the Roman Empire as the church grew

PERGAMUM  “The Corrupted Church”  (314-590 A.D.)
The church became corrupted when Constantine married the church to pagan Rome

THYATIRA  “The Tolerant Church”  (590-1517 A.D.)
When the church of England split from Catholicism, it also became tolerant of paganism

SARDIS  “The Dead Church” (1517-1750 A.D.)
The church was dead, however reformation began with Martin Luther’s Ninety-Five Theses

PHILADELPHIA  “The Reformed Church”  (1750 A.D. to Present)
This phase saw the greatest evangelical movement in history, which continues even today

LAODICEA  “The Privileged Church” (Millennial Age)
During the Millennial Age, the ‘mortal’ church will take their privileged position for granted

7_LettersAs described in Lesson 5 of this series, these seven churches are represented by the seven candles of the Passover mini-menorah on the Revelation master menorah, otherwise known as the Tree of Life in this study.  Since the theme of Passover is redemption, it’s no coincidence that the seven letters focus on the redemptive nature of God's divine ketubah, along with the requirements to be the overcomer that will qualify to be the bride of Christ.

But as we also learned in Lesson 5, God’s redemptive plan will take us on a journey through all seven Festivals and all 49 events of the Revelation before man will experience the "freedom throughout the land" promised by God's ultimate Jubilee. And if the end times are as near as most commentators believe, this freedom will likely be declared during the 70th Jubilee since Israel crossed over the Jordan River, which will also be the 40th Jubilee since the ministry of Jesus in the 1st century A.D.

Pt. 21 - The Church at Laodicea

The seventh and final letter went to the church at Laodicea, whose name is generally interpreted to mean “peoples opinions”. However, it seems to me that the interpretation “people judged” might be a bit more appropriate for two reasons.

Great_White_ThroneFirst, Laodicea is formed from the Greek words laos, which means “people” and dikazo, which is a personal "opinion" resembling a decree or sentence handed down by a judge. Hence "people judged" is an appropriate rendering.

Second, I believe Laodicea is the Millennial church that will be seeded by those who survive Christ's second coming and the subsequent judgment of man. And as the Millennium church, it would also witness the 'Great White Throne' judgment that will take place once the Millennial reign of Jesus is closed. In other words, the name "people judged" would be incredibly appropriate for the church that witnesses both of these events, and in the chronology of the seven churches of the Revelation, that could only be Laodicea.

The Menorah Pictographs

This pictographic study piggy-backs on the earlier study of 'Yeshua' in an interesting way that I didn't see coming until it presented itself by accident. It concerns the seven-candled 'Menorah' that was located in the Temple, and I trust you'll find this study equally as exciting, if not a bit bizarre. So let's begin by examining the Hebrew word for 'Menorah' as written in today's Hebrew language.

Menorah_HebrewReading from right to left, the first Hebrew letter is a 'Mem', followed by a 'Nun', a 'Resh', and finally a 'Hey'. Phonetically this would equal M-N-R-H, and when the proper vowel points are added, the sound is 'Menorah'. You'll remember the Menorah from our prior studies, and from the earlier post on the Tree of Life that illustrated the 49 events of the book of Revelation.

As with all of our Hebrew word studies, we can now refer to the original pictographic letters that were used thousands of years ago, and find an underlying meaning to this word that adds more depth to our understanding of it's role in God's overall scheme;

MemThe first letter is the 'Mem', depicted as a series of waves on the sea, which can suggest the various potential meanings of chaos, mighty, blood, or simply water or waves.  In this instance, we'll choose 'Mighty', and the reason will be apparent in a moment.

NunThe second letter is the 'Nun', which is a picture of a seed. This letter can mean either continue, heir, or son, since all of these come from a man's seed.  Or, it can simply mean seed.  But we'll choose 'Son' in this instance.

ReshThe third letter is a 'Resh', which you can clearly see resembles a man's head. This letter can mean first, top, or beginning, since in the ancient world a man was the first or top of his household. In this case the meaning of 'First' fits our purposes best.

HeyThe last letter is the 'Hey', which is a picture of a man trying to get your attention. This letter has the alternate meanings of look, reveal, or breathe, but can also mean praise or behold, depending on how and where it is used. But here we'll choose 'Reveal'

By now you've probably already guessed what the word 'Menorah' means in the underlying Hebrew pictographs;

"The Mighty Son First Revealed"

Menorah_TempleThis is quite a statement, and it made sense on a certain level, though it was slightly puzzling at the same time. Puzzling, that is, until I came across something quite by accident.

For just a moment, let's examine the structure of the Temple Menorah in the adjacent illustration, which is a replica of the actual Temple Menorah as depicted in the Arch of Titus in Rome. We can see that it had seven candles with seven flames, and we know that these flames were to remain lit at all times. In Old Testament times this menorah was intended to represent the seven Festivals of the Lord, which included Passover, Unleavened Bread, Firstfruits, Weeks, Trumpets, Day of Atonement, and Tabernacles. From this we can find some symbolism that refers to Jesus Christ, or 'Yeshua', since the two advents of Yeshua will fulfill all of these festivals in their entirety. Literally and figuratively speaking, they were the first signs of his appearing.

However, in the New Testament we learn that these seven candles also represent the seven churches in the book of Revelation. From this we can find additional symbolism that refers to Jesus, since the letters to the seven churches described the process of sanctification that determines who will inherit eternal life, and who will inherit the Kingdom of God and become his Bride. So in the case of both the Festivals and the churches, Yeshua was indeed first revealed by the symbolism behind this Menorah.

But that's not all there is.

THE YESHUA MENORAH

This next part may surprise you a bit, but just look at at the name 'Yeshua' in the Hebrew letters, and see if any additional Menorah symbolism is revealed;

YeshuaYou may have noticed it already, but if not, look at how the Lord's name has seven flames on top of the letters, just as the Menorah was always to have seven flames burning on top of it. Hebrew letters are somewhat unique in this manner, in that several of them have this flourish at the top that looks like a flame. But the name Yeshua is one of the few words in Hebrew that would exhibit this effect. So, it would seem that while the Menorah has clear symbolism that is revealed in the LIFE of Jesus, it also has a physical component that is revealed in the NAME of Jesus.

What more is there to say? The pictographic studies continue to reveal the deeper things of the Bible.

The Daniel Comparison - Part 3

In Part 2 of ‘The Daniel Comparison’ we noted that a large number of highly specific clues plugged in to the account when a ‘contemptible person’ came in to the kingdom of Syria and usurped the throne. At that time, an “overwhelming army” will also be “swept away” from before him, and if you’re like everyone else you want to know whose army that will be. So let’s begin this post by examining the conditions in Syria today, and see if we can find something that would line up with this "Kings of the South and the North" prophecy.

SUNNI vs. SHIITE

CaliphateIf you attended our summer session on the Islamic Antichrist a few years ago, no doubt you’re aware that Islam has two distinct groups of adherents, the Sunnis and the Shiites. Both factions believe in a restoration of the Islamic Caliphate that had ruled the Middle East, North Africa, and part of Europe in Medieval times, and both believe in a coming messiah figure called the Mahdi. But that’s where the similarities end, because while they share the same Koran, they have developed vastly different traditions and religious doctrine. It’s similar to Christianity’s division between Catholics and Protestants, but with far more rancor and occasionally deadly results. The truth is, these factions have been separated by the two following issues that cannot be repaired;

1) Sunnis believe that the leader of Islam (the ‘Caliph’) should be whoever is the strongest and most able to rule. But their Shiite counterparts believe that the Caliph should descend only through the blood-line of Ali, the son-in-law of Muhammad.

Sunni_vs._Shiite2) Muhammad predicted that two branches of Islam would emerge once he was gone, and that only ONE of these groups would survive and become Allah’s people. The fallout from this statement is obvious, because it means that all observant Sunnis know they must eliminate all Shiites to become that sole surviving group. Conversely, all Shiites know that they must eliminate all Sunnis to be that group. You can see how this creates an irreparable division, and it could very well be the reason for the renewal of the ancient battles between the Kings of the South and the North. This would most likely present itself as a Sunni block that is led by Egypt, and a Shiite bloc that is led by Iran. The distribution of these respective factions can be noted in the illustration to the left, with the Shiite population shown in blue, and Sunni in green. Obviously the Shiite bloc is concentrated in Iran, where it has 89% of the population.

WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH SYRIA?

Syrian_AllawitesOkay, so the question you’re probably asking yourself is, “What does that have to do with Syria?” The answer is, “Everything.” Even through Iran is the leader of the Shiite community, they use Syria and the terrorist group Hizbollah to accomplish their objectives in the Middle East. So here are just a few facts that emphasize the religious dynamics in this country;

1) Syria is dominated by Sunni Muslims, who account for about 75% of the population. Only 15% are Shiite Muslim, and most of that population is located in the northwest along the Mediterranean, as shown in the adjacent illustration.

2) Syrian president Basshar al Assad and most of his government are Allawite Shiites who rule despite their vast minority status in the country.

3) Most of the Syrian military is Sunni Muslim, with only one division that is entirely Allawite Shiite.

4) Basshar al Assad has enlisted the military presence of Iran, who is majority Shiite, to help stabilize his Shiite rule in this Sunni dominated country.

5) During recent protests, Assad’s Shiite division opened fire on protestors that belonged mostly to the Sunni Baath party, killing many of them in order to suppress the rebellion.

6) Iranian warships recently docked in Syria with the intent of building a naval base to support a Shiite naval presence in this Sunni dominated region.

7) Rockets offloaded from that Iranian ship were eventually confiscated by Israel while on their way to Egyptian rebels.

8) The Shiite controlled nations in the Fertile Crescent are currently led by Iran, but also include Iraq, Syria, and now Lebanon. These are all nations that would be part of the ancient empire of ‘The Kings of the North” led by Syria.

9) The Sunni controlled nations in the Fertile Crescent would include Egypt, Libya, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan. Each of these nations would be part of the ancient empire of ‘The Kings of the South” led by Egypt.

From all this, you can see how the battles lines are being drawn today. While we don’t read about this in western news services, eastern officials suspect what is about to happen. They fully expect a time of revolution within the Islamic countries that surround Israel, and that this battle will quickly become a bid for power between the Shiite nations of the North and the Sunni nations of the South. It will be the battles between the “Kings of the South and North” all over again. And after all, that’s precisely what the visions of Daniel predict.

With all that said, let’s continue our analysis of Daniel 11 and see where our additional clues are fulfilled. Once again, we'll insert the clues in bold blue text right next to each fulfillment;

WARS AND RUMORS OF WARS

“With a large army he will stir up his strength and courage against the king of the South ("it grew in power to the south.."). The king of the South will wage war with a large and very powerful army, but he will not be able to stand because of the plots devised against him. Those who eat from the king’s provisions will try to destroy him; his army will be swept away, and many will fall in battle ("..will destroy many"). The two kings, with their hearts bent on evil, will sit at the same table and lie to each other, but to no avail, because an end will still come at the appointed time. ("he will try to change the set times and the laws"). The king of the North will return to his own country with great wealth ("it prospered in everything it did"), but his heart will be set against the holy covenant. He will take action against it and then return to his own country.”  (Daniel 11:25-28)

Once again we have a number of clues that fit right into this particular spot. When the beast stirs up his courage against Egypt (“the king of the South”), we have to note that one of the clues said he would grow in power “to the South”. Also, it’s obvious that the “two kings” will try to change the “set times” because God goes out of his way to announce that the end “will still come at the appointed time” despite their efforts. In other words, the beast is trying to change God’s set times in order to break this prophecy. But there is another ramification to that statement. When this prophecy states “an end will still come at the appointed time”, we should immediately remember what Jesus alluded to in the Olivet Discourse;

“When you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”  (Luke 21:9)

It seems that those statements are speaking of the same point in history future, and God will obviously preserve his appointed times despite the workings of the antichrist. So let’s move on to the next paragraph, where one of Daniel’s long awaited appointed times is finally at hand;

AN APPOINTED TIME:

“At the appointed time ("desolations have been decreed") he will invade the South again, but this time the outcome will be different from what it was before. Ships of the western coastlands will oppose him, and he will lose heart.  Then he will turn back and vent his fury against the holy covenant ("He will confirm a covenant…"). He will return and show favor to those who forsake the holy covenant ("it grew in power….toward the Beautiful Land").”  (Daniel 11:29-30)

In the prior paragraph we read that the end would “still come at the appointed time.”  In other words, God has appointed certain times and dates for all of these things to be fulfilled, and while the beast would try to change those times, he will not succeed.  But in this paragraph, Daniel is told that an appointed time has arrived, and it’s now time for the beast to turn his attention to Jerusalem. So God sends ships to turn him back from Egypt and send him to Israel instead.  Enter the “Ships from the western coastlands.”

SHIPS FROM KITTIM:

While the NIV calls these the “ships from the western coastlands”, the original Hebrew in Daniel 11:30 actually reads “ships from Kittim”. This is a very important matter to address in our progressive revelation, because it defines WHERE these ships will come from, and WHOSE ships they will be. Ancient Kittim is known today as Cyprus, so in the most literal sense, the prophecy is saying that Ships from Cyprus will come to the aid of Egypt and turn the beast away.

Kittim_MapThis has never happened before in history IF we use the word Kittim in it’s literal sense. But this is where a problem develops, since many scholars feel that this portion of the prophecy was already fulfilled by the Syrian king Antiochus Epiphanes in 168 B.C. In that instance, Epiphanes was attacking Egypt when ships from the Roman Isles (not Kittim) turned him away. He then fled to the east and attacked Israel on his way back to Syria, appearing to be the fulfillment of the ‘contemptible person’ in Daniel 11:21. At the time, the priesthood and people of Israel assumed that Epiphanes was the antichrist that had been prophesied by Daniel because of several apparent fulfillments;

1) because he was a Syrian as required in the prophecy
2) because “ships” had turned him away from Egypt and towards Israel
3) because he stopped the sacrifices at the Temple
4) because he desecrated the Temple
5) because he attempted to institute worship of a different god

But there are critical portions of Daniel’s prophecies that were NOT fulfilled by Epiphanes. For instance, Daniel’s visions of a Ram and a Goat, which most scholars believe was fulfilled by Epiphanes, states that the Temple would lie desolate for 2,300 days or "evenings and mornings" (Daniel 8:14). But in the case of Epiphanes, the Temple was only desecrated for 3 years. It is historical fact that the Temple was re-dedicated in 165 B.C. on the 3rd anniversary of it’s desecration in 168 B.C., an event that led to the Feast of Dedication (John 10:22), otherwise known as Hanukkah. Well, 3 years is less than 1100 days on any Jewish calendar, and simply cannot equal 2,300 days.  Even if you half-count the days to reflect the evening and morning sacrifices (“2,300 evenings and mornings”), you still have 1150 days, which are more days than these 3 years could ever yield.

Still, if have footnotes in your Bible you’ll probably find an explanation of the days that historians have added to this count in order to press it's fulfillment with Epiphanes. But frankly, all of this is unnecessary if we just understand what the progressive revelation of Daniel is telling us; that the ‘contemptible person’ is still to come. So if the ‘beast’ in Daniel is still to come, and he will still be a Syrian like Epiphanes, then who would the “ships from Kittim” be today? Well, we have two choices;

1) the U.S. Navy
2) the Russian Navy

Both nations have naval bases in Cyprus. So let me ask you something; if an Islamic invasion was underway in Egypt, who would be more likely to respond to defend them?  Before you answer that, please consider a few very important points;

1) Russia has a military alliance with Iran, and this treaty requires them to come to the assistance of Iran during any military action, regardless of who initiates the action.

2) Iran is a Shiite nation that uses Syria to implement it’s Middle East strategies, and if Syria invaded Egypt, it would be at the behest of Iran. So, would the Russians act against their treaty with Iran by turning away a Syrian attack on Egypt?  Doubtful.

3) The United States has been an ally of Egypt for decades, but an adversary of both Syria and Iran. Would the United States have an interest in turning away a Syrian invasion of Egypt?  Perhaps not with the current administration, but in the overall scheme of things, yes.

Kittim_NavyBased on all of this, it is my belief that THIS is where we finally see the United States in prophecy, because the United States has a naval base in Cyprus (ancient ‘Kittim’) today. And it’s my current belief that U.S. ships will be the fulfillment of the “ships from Kittim” that will turn the beast away from Egypt when he attacks it a second time. And when they do, the end times will begin in earnest, since the beast will flee to the east and attack Israel, setting up the notorious ‘abomination’ that will cause the desolation of Israel;

THE ABOMINATION THAT CAUSES DESOLATION:

“His armed forces will rise up to desecrate the temple fortress and will abolish the daily sacrifice ("In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering"). Then they will set up the abomination that causes desolation ("on a wing of the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation"). With flattery he will corrupt those who have violated the covenant, but the people who know their God will firmly resist him.”  (Daniel 11:31-32)

Two highly specific clues are fulfilled in this paragraph, the stopping of the daily sacrifice, and the setting up of the abomination. In scripture, this is the one moment that appears to most define the antichrist, and it was so critical to our understanding that even Jesus spoke directly to this event;

“So when you see standing in the holy place ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand—then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains…………For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again. If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened."  (Matthew 24:15-22)

Notice how Jesus mentions that the ‘abomination’ set up by the antichrist is the SAME abomination spoken of by Daniel. And he doesn’t say it's ONE of the abominations included in Daniel‘s visions (Daniel 9:27, 11:31, 12:11). He says it's THE abomination, inferring that they are all one and the same. This should settle the matter once and for all, but sadly it doesn’t. Many commentators ignore these words of Jesus and STILL attribute this portion of the prophecy to Epiphanes. But in contrast, I would again point to our list of clues form Daniel's earlier visions, and how they point to a future antichrist. From verse 21 forward, our list of clues have been filling in very rapidly, even though none of them could be applied BEFORE verse 21.

NEXT TIME:

In Part 4 of the Daniel Comparison we’ll see what the antichrist will do during ‘the time of Jacob’s trouble’.

The Daniel Comparison - Part 2

In Part 1 of the ‘Daniel Comparison’ I mentioned that the book of Daniel was a self-contained progressive revelation of the end times, where certain clues from each of Daniel's earlier visions are fulfilled in his final vision of ‘The Kings of the South and the North’. In that post we combined the primary clues from each vision that would reveal the antichrist, and we took them and made one large list. Just for review, this was the completed list;

* He will be different from the other kings
* He will be a master of intrigue
* The ‘host of the saints’ will be given over to him
* He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven’
* He will destroy the mighty men and holy people
* He will cause deceit to prosper
* He started small, but grew in power
* When they feel secure, he will destroy many
* He prospered in everything it did
* He grew in power to the South/East/Beautiful Land
* He will try to change the set times & the laws
* Desolations have been decreed
* He will oppress His saints
* In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will end sacrifice & offering
* He will set up an ‘abomination of desolation’
* Saints will be handed over for time, times & half a time
* He had a mouth that spoke boastfully
* He will speak against the Most High
* He will succeed in whatever he does
* He will consider himself superior
* Truth was thrown to the ground
* He will become strong, but not by his own power
* Three of the first horns were uprooted before it
* He crushed and devoured victims, trampling those who were left
* He will take his stand against the Prince of Princes
* He will be destroyed, but not by human power

Pt. 20 - The Church at Philadelphia

The sixth letter to the churches went to those at Philadelphia, which as you may already know means “brotherly love”. This word comes from two separate Greek words, the first being phileo, which means ‘to love’, and the second being adelphos, which means ‘brother’.

Eumenes_IIPhiladelphia was founded in 189 B.C. by King Eumenes II of Pergamum during the time of the Attilid Empire. According to history, Eumenes II was quite fond of his brother, Attalus II, who had been very loyal and dedicated to his brother. Because of this loyalty, he gave him the nickname ‘Philadelphos’, which meant ‘one who loves his brother’, and he also named this city ’Philadelphia’ in his honor.

The Daniel Comparison

Although this post isn't part of the Revelation Series that we've been covering in class, I thought it would be a good time to add it to the mix because of recent events in the Middle East.

Egypt_HorsemanBy now we’ve all heard the news that the Muslim world is in a state of chaos that hasn't been seen for centuries, with spiritual fires raging from Morocco to Egypt to Iran. After centuries of despotism, it seems that many in the Middle East have had enough of dictatorial rule. Change is on the way. The question is, what kind of change will it be?

If you’ve studied eschatology (biblical end times) for any length of time, then you know that one of the signs of the last days is that an antichrist figure will emerge in the Middle East. This 'beast' will start small but will quickly conquer the Islamic lands surrounding Israel, building a military machine that will then invade and occupy Jerusalem itself. Once this occurs, the beast will then set out to implement the 'final solution'; he will attempt to completely destroy the Jewish people. But in the end, he himself will be completely destroyed when Jesus returns to save them.

So the question is, are today's events setting the table for the rise of this beast? And if so, then WHO is this beast, WHERE will he come from, and WHEN will he arrive? Fortunately the Bible provides the answers to these questions, if we would only examine the visions of Daniel as a progressive revelation.

Pt. 19 - The Church at Sardis

The name Sardis comes from the Greek word ‘sardeis’, the plural form of ‘sard’, and this singular and plural form has historical significance that we'll cover in a moment. But of greater significance is the meaning of this name, which is "those who come out", because coming out works on several different levels with this city and this church;

1) The name Sardis 'came out' of the word Sard
2) The Sardis of Apostolic times 'came out' of the former Sard due to population growth
3) Jesus counseled those in Sardis to 'come out' of their pagan Babylonian ways
4) By extension, Jesus counsels believers today to 'come out' of their pagan Babylonian ways
5) Sardis represents the Reformation church period when it 'came out' of Catholicism

Martin_LutherHistorically, most commentators believe that the church at Sardis was representative of the overall church from 1517 A.D. to approximately 1750 A.D., the time of the Reformation.  This period began when Martin Luther nailed his “Ninety-Five Theses” on the door of the Church of Wittenburg in Germany, outlining his grievances against the Papacy and Roman Catholicism. This led to the formation of the Lutheran church in Germany, and ultimately led to the overall Protestant reformation. From 1517 forward, the Protestant church came out of the Catholic church.

Spiritually, the patriarch of this church and the 5th signatory on God’s divine Ketubah was Moses, who along with Israel had 'come out' of Egypt during the Exodus.  As we go along in this post, the relationship between Moses and Sardis will become clear.

Pt. 18 - The Church at Thyatira

Thyratira means 'daughter', coming from the Greek word 'thygater', or the Koine Greek word 'thuateira', and the name of this city has an interesting etymology that appears to work on at least three different levels.

First, the city was named daughter by king Seleucus I Nicator around 301 B.C., when word arrived during a battle with Lysimachus that his wife had given birth to a daughter. Prior to that, the city had been named Pelopia, but it was later re-named Semiramis, after Babylon's 'Queen of Heaven'. That name has some import that we'll cover in a moment.

Church_of_EnglandSecond, As the 4th letter and the 4th church in the overall chronology of Christianity, Thyatira typified the medieval church that existed from about 590 to 1517 A.D. This is the period where the Church of England split off from Roman Catholicism, becoming it’s ‘daughter’ church. It was also the time of the 'Dark Ages' where the Bible was not available to the laity, as the church sought to be the only repository of God's word.

SemiramisThird, the 'Jezebel' at work in this church could be considered the spiritual daughter of the Old Testament Jezebel, who in turn was the spiritual daughter of Semiramis, for whom the city was formerly named. Why? Because the deeds of Thyatira's Jezebel were the same as the Old Testament Jezebel, whose deeds were the same as those of Semiramis, the pagan wife of Nimrod, the founder of Babylon.

As Nimrod's 'Queen of Heaven', Semiramis developed Babylon's pagan system of worship, which was later exported to the entire known world, corrupting man's understanding of God. In fact, virtually every pagan religious system practiced throughout the world today can be traced back to her Babylonian system. And the pagan rituals and pagan priesthood she developed there were later adopted by the Old Testament Jezebel when she married king Ahab. For those that remember the story of Jezebel from 1Kings and 2Kings, she became one of the most wicked influences on Israel in their storied history.

So when Jesus called this woman in Thyatira 'Jezebel', it is clear that she was a highly corrupting influence within the church, and that she was advocating the same pagan practices as the original Jezebel, who got them from Semiramis. When we consider the relationship between these harlots, their entire lives bear a stunning resemblance;

Pt. 17 - The Church at Pergamum

The third letter was written to the Church at Pergamum, the compromising church that married the world. In fact, marriage is at the root of the name, with Per meaning ‘improper’ and Gamos meaning ‘marriage’. So the name Per-gamos, or Pergamum, simply means ‘improper marriage’.  That begs the question, what or who was improperly married? The answer to this question functions on three levels.

1) The church at Pergamum was improperly married to the pagan culture that surrounded it, which Jesus points out in the body of this letter. It seems that since Satan couldn’t stop the Christian movement by killing it’s disciples, he decided to marry them to his pagan Roman Empire instead, and corrupt them from within. This was the tactic Balaam used against Israel in ancient times, and it has since been employed by spirits many times throughout history.

2) The chronological church was improperly married to Rome, when Constantine the Great, the Roman Emperor from 306 to 337 A.D., became the first Emperor to convert to Christianity. In 313 A.D. he issued the Edict of Milan, which reversed the persecutions of Diocletian and other former Emperors, paving the way for religious tolerance of Christians throughout the Roman Empire. Christianity soon found itself as the state religion, and while this newfound tolerance was appealing to the faithful, many of the pagan influences of the Roman Empire then became church doctrine. Once again, it was the way of Balaam.

Abraham3) Abraham was improperly married to his wife’s maidservant Hagar after his wife Sarah was found to be barren. God had promised Abraham that his descendents would become a great nation, but rather than waiting for God to fulfill this promise through Sarah, Abraham agreed to produce a family through a surrogate instead. The results of that decision hinder Israel and the world to this day, illustrating the negative consequences of an improper marriage. For this reason, as well as a few others, Abraham is the 3rd signatory on the divine ketubah.
